Kavisi looking to break Safari Rally jinx on fifth attempt

His last four editions have ended in disappointment and the unforgiving Kenyan terrain saw him retire

World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally has proven a tough test for Kenyan driver Evans Kavisi who has raced the event four times, retiring on all occasions.

As he makes a return to this year's event slated for Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 March in Nairobi and Naivasha, the Group N driver is keen to make his fifth Safari one to remember.

Kavisi has started three editions since Safari's return to the WRC calendar in 2021, having made his debut in 2018 when it was a round of the Africa Rally Championship (ARC).

"The mission for this year is simple, driving our Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X machine to the finish line on Sunday," he told Safarirally.ke adding that his team was putting final touches on car repairs to sort its mechanical issues.

Kavisi, who is part of the KCB Racing Team, will be competing in the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) category of the Safari.

"We want to take it one day at a time, and without overexerting ourselves. We do not want to compete with the elephants, so to speak. We will run our race and adjust as the action unfolds,” he continued.

The career architect hopes it will be fifth-time lucky at the Safari as he counts down the hours to lights off.

Having experienced the back-breaking nature of the Safari, an event that can even humble the very best, Kavisi is now preaching caution.

“The essence for the Safari is that we don’t get overexcited or exuberant; at least we can keep our head in the game,” he emphasised.

Beyond the Safari, the Kenyan is also looking forward to entering two or three ARC rounds this year.
